Just finished 10 day shoot as DP in Skowhegan, Maine for New Balance project that’s Digital Kitchen. This was definitely one of my favorite projects to date, a real loose shooting style yet with lots of intention. The people in the town generally think highly of New Balance as they employ a lot of people and give back to the community generously. Long Long shoot days...

True Blood main title sequence airs on HBO. The creative team at digital kitchen rallied to produce a stirring composition from an eclectic blend of visual sources that I think will provide a shot in the arm for this new program based on the popular Sookie Stackhouse book series by Charlaine Harris. I was brought on to shoot much of the title sequence with our trusty Rex 5 bolex, a modified shutterless Bolex, and our Minolta XL-401 Super 8 Camera. Stocks included 7201 and 7218 for both Super 8 and16m. The show is produced for HBO and Alan Ball of Six Feet Under fame.

Back to do some pick-ups with Digital Kitchen for the True Blood opening title sequence. They rented out the Little Red Hen Bar in Seattle, this great family owned bar that’s been around for almost 100 years. They let us have the run of the place for most of a day. We staged a number of set ups to mimic some honky-tonk bar in Louisiana where it was late at night and drinks had been flowing all night. DK hired some dancers to move provocatively.

Headed down to Louisiana to DP a shoot with Digital Kitchen for parts of the opening title sequence for HBO’s new series True Blood. Rented an RV and put over 1000 miles in four days but gathered some kick ass material. Tried cracklin and boudin for the first time and sampled other local flavor too. DK was trying to capture a dirty south vibe. We had some great locations scouted in advance including the most amazing waterway of swamp trees I’ve ever seen. Look for True Blood to air the next couple of months.

Remixed and re-authored all thirteen Stumptown Coffee Roasters projects for DVD and web. With so many projects floating within the company we decided the time was right to take inventory, consolidate, optimize picture and sound before we sealed things to the vault. It was an arduous task as one of the goals was to make things really pop for DVD and web. We performed reverse pull downs on all three formats, (16mm, Super 8, and 24P DV) and that really spruced things up and a full sound remix and color correction.

Finished designing photomural for new Stumptown Coffee Roasters Seattle café location. Its about 20’x11’ wall. I started with drum scans of original 16mm negative strips that I shot on source trips and then designed to create some narrative flow within piece to echo one Stumptown’s core values of visiting farms and have personal relations with their farmers.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters occasionally hosts events where a “Producer” of their coffee talks to the general public about their farm and coffee. As a way of introducing them, I sometimes put together a quick two-minute piece that I cut together in an afternoon. This one was for Aida Battle from El Salvador who owns a sweet little farm that has produced Cup Of Excellence winners in the past. These projects try to further emphasize Stumptowns continuing interest to developing long-term relationships with their farmers.

Designed five 30”x40” digital c-prints for Stumptown Coffee Roasters to be hung in their training facility at their new roastery in Seattle. Original source material was individual frames of 16mm film from our source trips that were then drum scanned, touched up in Photoshop, then printed and mounted on 3/8” black gator.

Put finishing touches on Tega and Tula, our longest Stumptown piece to date that takes viewers through all the main stages of producing coffee before it’s shipped from the farm. This was culled from our most recent trip to Ethiopia.
